What is a Cosmetic Dentist?

Technically, there is no such thing as a cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry is not one of the nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Yet, there are many dentists who claim to be cosmetic dentists and the public seems to generally accept that term as well.

So what’s the deal? Who is a cosmetic dentist and who is just a... “regular” dentist?

In reality, all general dentists practice some amount of cosmetic dentistry. Many specialists are also involved in cosmetics, such as prosthodontists, orthodontists, and periodontists. Anyone who improves the appearance of someone’s smile has some claim to the term cosmetic dentistry.

Typically, cosmetic dentistry refers to restoring teeth with porcelain veneers, crowns, or composite bonding. But it can also include teeth whitening, dental implants, and even dentures. These procedures are done by general dentists and prosthodontists (specialists in advanced restorative dentistry). Cosmetic dentistry can be done on otherwise healthy teeth, simply to improve the appearance. Or, it can also be a part of restoring teeth that already need dental work. Let’s take a look at a few cases that I (Dr. David Scardella) consider to be cosmetic, or aesthetic, dentistry. All cases were completed by me (some in partnership with dental laboratories) in our office Center for Progressive Dentistry in Duxbury, MA.
