Donating a Smile to a Veteran - Dentures

Periodically, we have the pleasure of taking on a charity case for a patient otherwise unable to afford their dental treatment. Recently, Center for Progressive Dentistry teamed up with Dental Lifeline Network to find an armed forces veteran in need of some dental care. We matched with a worthy patient named Bob, who served in the Army in the Vietnam War era. He had been on a waiting list for two years to find a dentist willing to take him on as a patient. Bob was looking to improve his smile and ability to chew food.

All treatment, from initial exam and x-rays to the final teeth, was donated and performed at no cost to the patient. Even the denture itself was donated by Dickerman Dental Prosthetics laboratory in Sharon, MA ( Here is Bob at his first appointment.

A plan was customized to fit Bob's dental needs. A 3D x-ray called Cone Beam CT (CBCT) was taken along with all other diagnostic information. Ultimately, we decided to replace Bob's remaining upper teeth with a full denture. This can be a difficult time for many patients, but Bob handled everything extremely well and was grateful for the opportunity to fix his teeth. We also decided to maintain his lower teeth, as they were still in good condition.

Here's Bob after transforming his smile using a denture. Although there are challenges with dentures, they are the ultimate cosmetic dentistry treatment because the patient and dentist have full control over the shape, size, position, and color of the teeth and gum tissue. Dr. Scardella and his team were lucky to have the opportunity to give back to such a deserving person and veteran.
